Disproportionate Minority Confinement

Of the 36,954 inmates incarcerated in Colorado, 23,316 are in prison and 13,638 are in jail. The ratio of Black inmates to White is 6.6:1

According to the Sentencing Project, "more than 60% of the people in prison are now racial and ethnic minorities. For Black males in their twenties, 1 in every 8 is in prison or jail on any given day. These trends have been intensified by the disproportionate impact of the 'war on drugs,' in which three-fourths of all persons in prison for drug offenses are people of color."

32% of African American males eventually wind up in jail. Only 16% will go to college, and only 6% of African American males graduate within 6 years. Ultimately, less than 5% will be proficient in writing or math after leaving high school. 94% of African American males struggle to make a living.

Victimization

According to the Department of Justice Statistics, 49% of murder victims are black, despite African Americans making up only 13% of the population.

The rate of carjacking is three times higher for African Americans than white.
